Scratching the Surface of Nahum

@#$%

Summarizing the entire Bible in an extraordinarily concise yet comprehensive prayer to close a church board meeting on 11 March 2013, an elder confessed, "Lord, you have been clear.  If we obey You, things will always work out."

    That's it!

That summarizes Biblical revelation of God's existential and eternal promises to us.

Obey Him and be blessed by Him!

Every book of the Bible is a variation, paraphrase, or whatever-we-wanna-call-it of that theme.

Nahum repeats it/Him: "God won't tolerate anything that distracts from Him and will avenge and settle the score on behalf of His covenant people.  God will serve up justice...He cares for those who search for protection in Him."

Notice the warning to people/nations that mess with God's people: "God...will avenge and settle the score on behalf of His covenant people."

That goes way back to Genesis and God's promise to Abraham: "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse."

Take it as a warning or threat but certainly a promise.

Mess with God's people and you're gonna pay!

Sooner or later and usually sooner than later and definitely in the end, anyone who attacks or otherwise assaults God's anointed ain't gonna last.

Nahum's message was for the Assyrians; but the prophetic utterance has been the same from alpha to omega.

When anyone fights with God's people, they are fighting with God.

    Think about it.

When anyone takes on God's people, they are taking on God almighty, the Maker of..."

That's why God's people have always liked the odds of being on His side.

History, again, His story, does not lie.

What happens to the enemies of God's people?

What has happened to the enemies of God's people throughout history?

    Pharaoh?  Gone!

    Egyptian Empire?  Gone!

    Amalekites?  Gone!

    Assyrians?  Gone!

    Hittites?  Gone!

    Chaldeans?  Gone!

    Goliath?  Gone!

    Philistines?  Gone!

    Babylonians?  Gone!

    Persian Empire?  Gone!

    Greek Empire?  Gone!

    Roman Empire?  Gone!

    Byzantine Empire?  Gone!

    Ottoman Turkish Empire?  Gone!

    Hitler?  Gone!

    Nazi Germany?  Gone!

    Stalin?  Gone!

    Soviet Empire?  Gone!

Are you/we/they starting to get the picture?

    God loves His people.

Nahum: "God will avenge and settle the score on behalf of His covenant people."

If I were sitting in some government think tank in Iran, Egypt, or even the good old United States, I would think twice and take a long look at history before I moved against the people of Israel.

Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over 'til it's over."

From Genesis to Revelation, Biblical revelation declares God's people win sooner or later, usually sooner than later, and definitely in the end.

    That's what the Bible concludes.

A quick look at history confirms that conclusion.

The elder was right back on March 11, 2013.

Yep, the message of the Bible is, "God wins!" Now, which side/team do we want to be on? Hmm...
"Righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost" THAT's the kingdom of God, who wouldn't want to be a part of it? I guess the unrighteous, warring, miserable in any and all other spirits, folks you find most everywhere (Even, most disturbingly, in the mirror).

Bob,
Keep scratchin the surface! You have something to say that we all need to hear! How relevant was this and how we need to learn from the history of God's enemies!
