Scratching the Surface

of

Why We’re in Such a Mess and How to Get Out of It

Our world, America, education, entertainment, economy, media, marriages, families, so many churches, and all of the below are in such a mess.

Only ostriches don’t see that.

How did it happen?

How can we be saved from it?

It goes back to the garden: “The serpent was clever…’Do I understand that God told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?’…The woman answered, ‘No, we can eat from every tree but the one in the middle of the garden.  God told us not to eat from that one or we will die’…The serpent snickered and said, ‘You won’t die.  Did God really say that?  Did God really mean that?’…So with doubt in her mind about what God said and meant, she ate and so did her husband.”

You know the rest of the story.

God said don’t to the Adamsons but they did…and do…and there’s been nothing original about sin ever since.

Notice the clever trick?

The serpent aka devil – Jesus called it the father/source/starter of all lies and now you know where liars get their inspiration – placed doubt into the minds of Adam and Eve: “Did God really say that?  Did God really mean that?”

That’s how they got messed up and that’s why we continue to get messed up.

Doubting God’s Word.

When we doubt God’s Word in Jesus by the book, we are tempted to make up stuff and pretend it’s God’s Word.

Here’s how it goes: “Did God really say/mean that we should feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned, share, extend mercy to all, and forgive?…Did God really say/mean all life is sacred from womb to tomb?…Did God really say/mean what Jesus and the Bible teach about money, marriage, sex, and…?”

Get it/Him?

We’re in such a mess because we have doubted God’s Word in Jesus by the book.

We have placed our words into His mouth.

We have reimagined creation: “So man created God.  In the image of man, man created God.”

Billy is a Special Olympics world golf champion.

We play regularly.

He teaches me a lot about golf…and life.

Recently, I muttered, “My putting is awful.”

He said, “You should practice.”

Not long after that, I complained, “I would have made that putt if it weren’t for the guy cutting the grass behind me.”

He said, “Don’t be distracted.”

God’s Word is clear in Jesus by the book; but the serpent and its buddies come along to confuse us by distracting us from His Word: “Did God really say that?  Did God really mean that?”

Because we fall for it and allow dark doubt apart from God’s illuminating truth to seduce us from Jesus by the book, we’re in such a mess; and we will continue to be in such a mess as long as we fall for it.

We need to remember Billy’s advice to me about putting…and life: “Don’t be distracted.”

For if we focus on God’s Word in Jesus by the book and filter all questions through Him, we can be saved from it.
