Handling Truth
If you haven’t seen A Few Good Men, skip down to the 11th paragraph.
Directed by Rob Reiner, released in 1992, and starring Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, and other cinematic icons, I don’t know many people that haven’t heard if not understood one of the most famous lines of all time uttered by Jack Nicholson’s Marine Colonel Nathan Jessup: “You can’t handle the truth!”
Assuming you’ve seen it and aren’t down at the 11th paragraph, you know the preface. First Lieutenant Jonathan James Kendrick played by Kiefer Sutherland carries out an illegal though standard operating procedure “Code Red” on “substandard” Marine Private William Santiago as ordered by Colonel Jessup. The intention of the hazing by peers as ordered is to elevate the soldier’s performance. It goes wrong, Santiago dies, two Marines involved in the hazing are put on trial for murder, and Navy Lieutenant JG Daniel Kaffee is drafted to defend the Marines; and during his investigation, Lieutenant Kaffee discovers Lieutenant Kendrick had ordered the Code Red because he had been ordered by Colonel Jessup. In other words, Kaffee’s goal evolves to expose Jessup of instigating the crime and bringing him to justice.
O.K., if you’ve seen it, you know what prompted that famous line that most have heard if not understood.
Colonel Jessup believes the procedure is necessary for national security: “Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.“
He goes on, “We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said ‘thank you’ and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to!”
As you recall if you’ve seen it and aren’t down to that 11th paragraph, Kaffee presses Jessup and the Colonel admits that he ordered the Code Red, is arrested on the spot, the Marines are discharged dishonorably instead of incarcerated for life and maybe getting the death penalty, Kaffee gets kudos, and most viewers feel good about the cute and cuddly Tom, I mean Kaffee, bringing down the surly, serious, furious, Shiningish, Joker-faced totally B-A-not-yet-femininized Jessup Jack.
O.K., confession time.
Kaffee was right about Jessup not following the rule of law.
Pero Jessup was right about people not being able to “handle the truth” about living in a dangerous world requiring - let’s say something Biblical - shepherds/sheepdogs to protect people/sheep from wolves/evildoers.
While I won’t hazard the percentage, lots of people can’t/won’t handle the truth.
Churches sing “Blest Be the Tie that Binds” and “They’ll know We Are Christians by Our Love” while camping out with their little tribes supporting ecclesiastical pyramid schemes to fuel bloated bureaucracies in total defiance of our Lord’s high priestly prayer in John 17.
Putin is evil and Zelensky is not Washington, Lincoln, or Churchill as he enables abortion and turns a blind eye or worse to human trafficking and other evils in Ukraine.
People are so fed up with the aforementioned not to mention CCPC19 hyperbole, hysteria, and histrionics that they are turning off the evening news from left, right, up, down, and all around as “Liar, liar, pants on fire” plays in their heads.
O.K., here’s the truth.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; and unless we receive Him as Lord and Savior, we will not live forever in heaven and not get along with each other by going to each other through Him with grace, mercy, and forgiveness wrapped in agape (John 14).
Ask yourself as you look at 46, Putin, Zelensky, EU, NATO, your favorite religious franchise, local school board, Congress, Supreme Court, marriage, family, and even local church that should know better as it pretends a faith rarely more than coincidental to Jesus by the book as enlightened by the Holy Spirit who never contradicts Jesus by the book, “Why haven’t I heard any of ‘em bringing Jesus into any of their conversations, deliberations, pontifications, platitudes, procedures, and decisions? Come to think of it, what does it mean that I haven’t heard any of them mention Jesus by name?”
So there it is.
He is excluded.
That’s why everything is so messed up in your/our…
It’s true.
Everyone but the remnant of people in our world that know Jesus is the answer to everything that divides us and is destroying civilization can’t/won’t handle that truth.
So here it is.
The truth.
Most people in our world in government, education, marriages, families, even churches that should know better, and all of the below don’t really believe in Jesus as Lord; for if they did, they’d be saved.
Jesus weeps.
He wants to save us.
That’s the truth that must be confessed and “handled” or we will continue on this path to mutual destruction.
